About US
Our Story
The Prison Veterans Society was created from a simple but deeply important realisation — that many former prison staff were leaving the service and losing the strong sense of connection, camaraderie, and identity that had been such a significant part of their lives.
After visiting former colleagues who were facing illness, isolation, and difficult transitions after leaving the Prison Service, it became clear that too many people felt forgotten once their service had ended. Years of dedication, loyalty, resilience, and commitment had shaped their lives, yet many no longer had the support network they once relied upon every day.
The Prison Veterans Society was formed to change that.
Our aim is to ensure that no Prison Veteran feels alone, disconnected, or unrecognised after leaving the service. We believe the bonds formed within the Prison Service do not end with retirement or departure — they remain part of who we are.
what we stand for
The Prison Service creates a unique community built on trust, shared experiences, and mutual support. Throughout their careers, staff work together in challenging and demanding environments where teamwork and understanding are essential.
When that chapter of life ends, many former staff find the transition difficult. Losing daily contact with colleagues and stepping away from the structure and identity of service can leave a significant gap.
The Prison Veterans Society exists to help rebuild that sense of belonging by creating a supportive and welcoming community where former prison staff can:
-
Reconnect with former colleagues
-
Build new friendships
-
Access peer support
-
Attend events and social gatherings
-
Share memories and experiences
-
Continue being part of a trusted community

MISSION/VISION
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to support former prison staff who identify as Veterans, along with those who are partially retiring from the service by fostering reconnection, promoting wellbeing, and rebuilding the sense of camaraderie experienced during service. We aim to ensure that no Prison Veteran feels isolated or forgotten after leaving the Prison Service by offering peer support, social engagement, and access to practical assistance.
OUR VISION
Our vision is to build a nationwide network of Prison Veterans Clubs that creates lasting, supportive communities for all former prison staff. We strive to provide accessible, inclusive spaces—both online and in person—where Veterans can reconnect, share experiences, and receive support when they need it most. Through meaningful engagement, strong partnerships, and sustainable funding, we aim to become a recognised and trusted source of support for Prison Veterans across the UK.
OUR VALUES
Respect
We treat all Veterans with dignity and appreciation for their service, experiences, and contributions.
Camaraderie
We honour the strong bonds formed within the Prison Service and work to maintain and rebuild those connections after service ends.
Inclusivity
We welcome all former prison staff who identify as Veterans, ex-serving members who have moved into other roles, and those who are partially retiring from the service, recognising the value of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
Compassion
We understand that transitioning out of service can be challenging. We offer empathy, encouragement, and support without judgement.
Integrity
We act transparently, ethically, and responsibly in all we do, especially when managing the Veterans Fund and supporting those in need.
Community
We believe in the power of shared experience and mutual support. Our activities strengthen community ties and promote positive engagement among Veterans.
Wellbeing
We prioritise the emotional, social, and practical wellbeing of our members through meaningful activities and peer-to-peer support.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Prison Veterans Society is more than just a website or social group — it is a growing community built on shared experiences and mutual support.
As the society develops, we hope to expand local Veterans Clubs across the UK, organise more community events, strengthen peer support networks, and continue creating opportunities for Prison Veterans to reconnect and support one another.
Together, we can ensure that no Prison Veteran is ever forgotten.
